CalculArt: Mathematics as Art in a 3-D Virtual Environment

The exhibit features a 3-screened, back-projection portable virtual-reality environment called CANVAS.  Created by the Beckman Institute, at the University of Illinios.  It allows visitors to interact and create their own imagery in planned workshops.

Alden Days

Location: Downtown Alden

Alden has scheduled fun festivites beginning with a cake walk on Friday, July 25th from 6-7:30pm at the Alden Bar and Grille.

On Saturday, July 26th there is a rummage sale and bake sale at the Alden Untied Methodist Church starting at 9:00am. From 12:00pm-6:00pm enjoy a Kids Carnival held at Tennis Court Park and eat at the Famous Beef  Roast Lunch in Downtown Alden on the lawn of the Alden Bar & Grille.  A Parade will be held at 1:00pm.  A community "Picnic in the Park" is scheduled from 6-9pm featuring live music.  Bring your own picnic dinner.

Jump to Japan: Discovering Culture Through Popular Art

The Great Lakes Children's Museum brings this exciting new exhibit to the historic Con Foster Museum building at Clinch Park in Traverse City.  Jump to Japan focuses on three art forms-anime (animation), manga (comic books and graphic novels), and traditional woodblock and scroll prints. Pokeman and Hello Kitty are well known icons of Japanese pop culture and are immensely popular with American youth.  This exhibit connects these popular art forms to Japanese Culture in a 1,500 square foot three-part exhibit.

This Pulitzer and Oscar winning musical, scored by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, is a modern remake of the Shakespearian classic, Romeo and Juliet.  Set in the slums of New York City two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, prepare for a rumble and amidst the conflict Tony, a jet gang member, falls in love with Maria, sister to Bernardo, the leader of the Shark gang.  Filled with moments of humor and hope, audiences have been enthralled with the beautiful music and energetic dancing as the story evolves into the ending climax.  $20 adults, $10 students, call (231) 386-5001 for tickets.
