The Traverse City area hosts a wide variety of festivals throughout the year. By far our largest annual event is the National Cherry Festival, held in early July in downtown Traverse City. Other major celebrations throughout the year are listed below, with links to the official sites if available.

CalculArt: Mathematics as Art in a 3-D Virtual Environment
The exhibit features a 3-screened, back-projection portable virtual-reality environment called CANVAS. Created by the Beckman Institute, at the University of Illinios. It allows visitors to interact and create their own imagery in planned workshops.
City Open-Air Market
(Sat. )The new open-air market showcases Northern Michigan self-grown products and self created wares from growers, artists, and artisans.
The City Market is conveniently located at the railroad station on the corner of Eighth and Woodmere Avenue, next to the Traverse Area District Library. Features 70 stalls, 40 stalls positioned under the roofline canopy offering cover from the elements.
This open-air market showcases bedding plants in the spring, summer fruits, vegetables and herbs and fresh baked goods and other sweets, fresh cut flowers, Christmas evergreens and artifacts created and produced by local artisans.
Held (36) weeks on Saturday 8am-2pm starting the first week of April and ending in December.
Ways of Seeing: The Abstract Art of Jennifer Gardiner Lam, Delbert Michel, and Debra Lanning
These artists' depict real forms in a simplified or reduced way, keeping only an illusion of the original natural subject. The landscape...the human form...even music...all used as starting points.
The Mercado is located within historic Building 50 at the Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City.
Jump to Japan: Discovering Culture Through Popular Art
(Mon. Tue. Wed. Thu. Fri. Sat. )The Great Lakes Children's Museum brings this exciting new exhibit to the historic Con Foster Museum building at Clinch Park in Traverse City. Jump to Japan focuses on three art forms-anime (animation), manga (comic books and graphic novels), and traditional woodblock and scroll prints. Pokeman and Hello Kitty are well known icons of Japanese pop culture and are immensely popular with American youth. This exhibit connects these popular art forms to Japanese Culture in a 1,500 square foot three-part exhibit.

Home Builders Association 2008 Parade of Homes
Thirty-five beautiful new homes located throughout the greater Grand Traverse area are featured in this years parade. Advanced tickets are available at the Traverse City Visitor Center for $8. A Parade Home audio CD tour guide is only $2. Beginning June 14th $10 tickets will be available at all Parade Homes.
Hours are as follows:Sat. June 14th and 21st-12pm-9pm, Sundays, June 15th and 22nd 12pm-5pm, Mon. & Tues. June 16th and 17th 3pm-9pm, Weds. June 18th Closed, Thurs. & Fri. June 19th and 20th 12pm-9pm.
Bayside Travellers' Contra and Square Dances
(2nd Sat. )Held every second Saturday of the month at the Gilbert Lodge -Twin Lakes in Traverse City. This dance features live callers and bands. Instructions in basic dance technique will be offered at 7:00pm, and the dancing continues until 11:00pm.
Wood Boats of Leelanau: a Photographic Journal
Wood Boats of Leelanau: a Photographic Journal is based on John Mitchell's award-winning book, brings Leelanau's maritime heritage to life with photos and video presentation.
The exhibit is on display at the Leelanau Historical Society Museum located at 203 East Cedar Street in Leland. the Museum hours are Wednesday-Saturday 10am-4pm.
6th Annual Heartwood Furniture and Fine Art Show
Hand-crafted furniture by Chip Gadek, Matt Joppich, Bob Purvis, Joe Buteyn, Larry Hammond and Joe Sterns. Fine art by Mary Fuscaldo, E.P. Lewandowski and Angela Schuler. Hours Saturday - 10am - 6pm and Sunday - 10am - 4pm. Opening reception on Friday, June 20th from 6-8pm.
Annual Strawberry Festival
The Downtown Alden Business Association will host its annual Strawberry Festival at the Alden Depot Park. Michigan berries are served over shortcake and topped of with real whipped cream. 3rd Annual Northern Michigan Garden Expo
The Emmet County Parks and Recreation Department and the MSU Extention host the 3rd Annual Northern Michigan Garden Expo at the Emmet county Fairgrounds. The Expo is a showcase for outdoor and garden-based businesses and includes vendor displays, demostrations and educational lectures. Admission is free.

Bird Hike at Lighthouse West Property
Dr. Gregory S. Butcher will lead a hike at Lighthouse West on Saturday, June 21st. International bird tour leader and naturalist, Jeff Kingery will assist Dr. Butcher. A light breakfast of coffee and rolls will be served prior to the hike which begins at 8:00am and lasts approximately 2 hours. Funds raised at this event will be used to help defray costs of continued bird surveys. This hike offers a great opportunity to learn more about migrating birds from the top bird conservationist in the nation. Both leaders will discuss the importance of the Lighthouse West property for migrating and nesting birds. We will meet at the Shuster property just south of Leelanau State Park. Summer Fun Day
We're ushering in summer with a free family celebration at Grass River Natural Area. No "lazy day" here, but an afternoon filled with fun and discovery for the whole family. There will be hikes, games, and activites sure to please everyone.
Summer Solstice Fly-In Party
Join us at the Firefly along the banks of the Boardman River in downtown, Traverse City for deals, tunes and good times!
Summer Solstice Festival at the Village
Held at Historic Building 50 on the beautiful grounds of the Grand Traverse Commons. Festivities include a scavenger hunt, children's activities, and music.
"Bikers Out For Blood"
Motorcyclists will take part in this 90-mile ride through Leelanau County to help raise funds to purchase needed equipment for Michigan Community Blood Centers, the non profit blood provider for local hospitals. This tour and fundraiser is sponsored by KLT 97.5-98.9 The Rock Station and Performance Customs in Traverse City. The ride will include several poker run stops. An after-ride party will feature food, entertainment, and more. For more information call (616) 233-8600.
The Chenille Sisters
One of the great sell-outs in the Northport Community Arts Center's history returns! These singers exploded on the music scene in 1985 as single artists doing their own thing. They shared the limelight from time to time and discovered that their voices melted together like honey butter and hot toast. The Chenille Sisters were born and they crisscrossed the country performing at festivals, pavilions, auditoriums and have crooned for NPR on Garrison Keillor's A Praire Home Companion and All Things Considered.
