Point Betsie, four miles north of Frankfort on M-22, marks the southern entrance to the Manitou Passage, and there has been a lighthouse here since 1858. The current structure was the last manned lighthouse on this side of Lake Michigan, and was not automated until 1983. Because of its bright color scheme and its scenic location at the very edge of the surf, it is said to be the second most-photographed lighthouse in the U.S. and is a favorite place for watching sunsets. Still in operation as an automated light, it is being cared for by a nonprofit group, the Friends of Point Betsie Lighthouse, and is open for tours. The lighthouse just underwent a $1 million exterior renovation, and the group is now fundraising for interior restoration.
